SpringboardTRAC counters are designed to be versatile and easy to install. Before installing the TRAC unit, you'll need to plan where it will be positioned and how you will route the power and internet to the unit. The counting unit was designed for a DIY setup, but we also recommend consulting a local contractor or electrician for installation assistance.  

Power Options

The SpringboardTRAC unit is installed above the door and requires power to operate. You have two options to deliver power to your traffic counter.  We recommend that you consult a qualified electrician to explore the best options for your store.

Power Over Ethernet (PoE) recommended 

Power over Ethernet allows you to connect both the power and the internet simultaneously. The power is delivered via the ethernet cable, giving you both a reliable source of power and internet connectivity.

PoE requires a specialized equipment designed to handle and produce an electrical current through the ethernet connection.  Consulting an IT or electrical professional is highly recommended.
       
Benefits of using PoE vs traditional power options: 

  • Because PoE allows you to use one cable for both power and data transmission, it will save you money on purchasing and running cable for networking equipment.
  • Depending on the location of your wireless router, PoE may provide a more reliable internet connection to your SpringboardTRAC unit.
  • Makes installing or expanding a network much simpler and cheaper in buildings where it is too expensive or inconvenient to install new power lines.
  • Using PoE lets you mount devices in places where it would be impractical to install power, such as drop ceilings.
  • Using PoE can reduce the number of cables and electrical outlets needed in a crowded equipment room or wiring closet.

Installing a traditional Electrical Outlet

To supply power to the TRAC unit, you will need to install a power outlet in close proximity to the placement of the unit. See the placement diagrams below for reference.

It is critical that the power outlet connected to the TRAC unit is consistently connected to power. Please do not connect to an outlet controlled by a switch.

Preparing for Installation

The SpringboardTRAC camera needs to be placed directly above the entryway in order to capture the traffic as it comes into your store.

  • The TRAC unit should be installed indoors or in a secure, covered outdoor area, to avoid exposure to the elements
  • If connecting your TRAC unit via a Wi-Fi connection, it is best to avoid installing in a location which requires the wireless signal to pass through cement, concrete, and metal structures. This will reduce the range of transmission. You will also want to make sure that the TRAC counter is well within the range of your WIFI router to ensure a strong connection.  (Best to ensure the device is within 80 feet of the wireless router.)
  • You can test your wifi connection strength by pre-checking if devices (phones, iPads, etc) have a minimum of 2 bars of signal strength at the install location. It's the easiest way to determine if you have adequate signal strength. The counter will need a consistent, strong Wi-Fi signal to function properly.
  • In some cases, a Wi-Fi repeater/booster will be recommended of the signal strength is not adequate.
  1. The TRAC unit should be placed on the ceiling above the doorway you want to count traffic in.

2. The unit must be placed about 12 inches away from the wall to allow the camera to have a clear view of the entryway.

3. Does your door swing into the store? Be sure the counter is installed far enough into your store so the door does not cross the view of the camera as it is opened.

Network Requirements for Traffic Counting Units 

Network Requirements:

  • Counter requires a 2.4 GHz network, this is the only Wi-Fi network type supported by the counter. 
  • Counter must be on a non-guest network or authentication will not be able to occur and will not activate properly.

Authentication Requirements:

  • Make sure your router is set to WPA/WPA2 authentication. Due to the outdated and insecure nature of WEP authentication, counters only operate with WPA/WPA2 authentication. 

Security and Firewall Settings: 

  • Check the security and firewall settings to make sure that UTP and UDP ports are not closed (must allow for open and outgoing UDP and TCP) and meet the right requirements.
  • UDP Requirements: Ensure that your settings allow for open and outgoing UDP 5959-5970
  • TCP Requirements: Outgoing TCP 80 and 443. 

Placement of Counter in Store: 

  • Mount counter no more than 80 feet away from Wi-Fi router.
  • If the counter and router are separated by obstruction obstacles such as brick and mortar walls, mirrors, tile and other physical structures that could weaken the WiFi signal, you should consider purchasing a Wi-Fi repeater (Wireless Extender).
